Firearms Background Check

While most people agree that a firearms background check is necessary, a bit of discretion would go a long way when determining who should have a gun, and who shouldn’t.

When a firearms background check is conducted, a store that sells firearms will be notified right away if a person can, or cannot, purchase a gun. The background checks that every gun owner must go through are sent to the FBI within minutes, and a response is usually only a matter of seconds. The FBI database scans each application for a few key factors, and if a person does not have a stellar record, a gun license will not be approved. Still, there are some people currently being refused the right to own a gun, and the types of people that get denied would surprise you.

There have been many news reports detailing those that are denied the right to carry a gun, and many of those citizens are current law enforcement personnel. Why is this happening? Simply put, any sort of blemish upon a person’s record will automatically result in gun license denial – even if a minor misdemeanor happened decades ago. Many people are not happy with the FBI background check system, and some people claim that crimes committed while they were minors are still showing up on their background checks. However, there are still hundreds of people that are prevented from purchasing firearms every day, and the majority of these people should not have one.

The idea behind a firearms background check is that criminals, illegals, and those people that should not be carrying a weapon will not be able to harm society with a gun once they are denied. Of course, criminals can still purchase guns on the black market, but they cannot walk into a sporting store and purchase a pistol. While the government is seeking to protect its citizens, some people feel that certain decisions regarding a person’s past should be taken into careful consideration.

For example, the person that stole a candy bar at some point during their life will have a small mark on their record. In the eyes of the gun laws, this makes that person a criminal. Hence, no matter what sort of crime you committed, you will not be able to buy a firearm if your record does not come back absolutely spotless. Obviously, there are certain flaws with this sort of background check, but these flaws have yet to be fixed.

Some argue that a firearms background check is absolutely necessary, while other believe that this sort of check should be much more lenient. Regardless, the law still stands and a person that has any sort of criminal record will not be able to buy a firearm within the United States at this time.
